Portfolio initial screen designs

I have whittled my many ideas down to two. My personal favourite is the 2nd, by far - but I wanted to get across the various thought processes I've been through. I'm open to suggestions/criticisms for both of the ideas, and how I could compromise in order to gain the best from my portfolio.

Hi,

Very classy designs here. I really like the first of the two although the navigation on the second works better I think.

The colour system on your second design is also a lot crisper I think.

I don't know if I like the gradient fill effect of the background though.
